A Suécia celebra no dia 13/12 o Dia de Santa Lucia, uma tradição italiana que praticamente desapareceu no país de origem, mas está cada vez mais forte na Suécia.
No antigo calendário sueco a noite de 12 para 13 de Dezembro era a noite mais longa do ano, uma noite cheia de mistério, durante a qual até os animais podiam falar. A comemoração acontece no dia mais escuro do ano no país, e vem iluminar a vida dos suecos (daí vem o nome Lucia, que significa "luz") e abrir as portas para as celebrações do Natal.
Somente a Lucia pode usar a coroa de velas (e ser ela é uma honra para as suecas). Além dela, há também os ajudantes, que se vestem de branco. /
